The origins of tattooing
Tattooing is an ancient practice whose origins date back several millennia. The first known traces of tattoos were discovered on Ötzi, a man who lived more than 5,000 years ago and was found mummified in the Alps. His tattoos, made up of simple patterns, are said to have had a therapeutic function.
In ancient times, the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used tattooing for religious, cultural, or punitive purposes. In Polynesia, tattooing was a rite of passage, indicating a person's social rank and achievements. Asian peoples, particularly in Japan, also developed complex and symbolic styles.
In the Middle Ages, tattooing was associated with marginality in Europe before reappearing at the end of the 18th century with explorers and sailors. Today, it is a form of artistic and identity expression, with a great diversity of styles and techniques.
Tattooing has therefore crossed the ages and cultures, passing from sacred ritual to social marker, to become a popular and universal art.
